Wired has
been on an apocalypse kick
lately, and
this one is the best yet. They even have a form of apocalypse I haven't heard of before - geomagnetic. The short version is that modern power grids basically act like antennas, and when the sun tosses a lot of charged particles our way they can blow the grids. Imagine you see
a little color in the sky one night, and then BAM! Your block goes dark and stays that way for months while the government scrambles to rebuild critical electrical infrastructure.
